Jerry M - 1912 Grand National Winner

Jerry M was a big, handsome horse who placed second to Jenkinstown in the 1910 Grand National, giving him 30 pounds. Taken by his owner -- Sir Charles Assheton-Smith, who also owned Grand National winners Cloister and Covertcoat -- cross-channel, he won the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris that year, injuring himself and sidelined for a year in lay-off. He came back in 1912 to win the Grand National at Aintree at top weight of 12 st 7 lbs, the first dual-winner of the two big steeplechase races. Jerry M.'s sire, Walmsgate (by Hampton and out of Flying Footstep), was a well-bred horse who never ran, but was a successful sire of both flat racers and steeplechasers. Jerry M.'s dam came from a family of Irish bred mares with some jumping winners in their pedigrees.
